the reason of the differnt rim was it was the last car used for the shoot and the rest had bent rims due to the 2 big jumps so they painted a plain steel gm wheel and figured no one would notice.they use 3 80 t/as for this one and they had to mount nitrous on 2 of them ,i have the magazine with pics and info on them from 1980 The first one was way better 77 trans am t topsġ980 turbo trans am "son of trigger". Lol i love thumbnail 4 where the T/A is sliding in the dirt and sand and the front hubcap is different lol. The 1977 Trans Am SE pontiac 400 is the best performance wise, and looks too. And no the 1994 trans am and up are the worst but not by far but to me it doesnt matter any t/a is cool but the 2 most B/A trans ams in the world are the 1977 one used in Smokey and the Bandit 1.the 77 Trans Am SE 6.6 L Pontiac 400, and the 1980 Trans Am (whether its the turbo trans am or not, the looks on that car are the same for the turbo one and non turbo t/a). Sorry but thats nowhere near true i know someone who owns a 1980 trans am 4.9 turbo trans am its got a stock turbo T/A engine and the tires smoke a lot. Most of these cars now have 400 engines that the dealers switched when the original Turbo 4.9 didn't even last 2-3 years. Not to mention that the Turbo is notoriously fragile. The car could barely chirp them with the stock engine.
#WHAT YEAR WAS THE TRANS AM IN SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT INSTALL#
When they made Smokey & The Bandit II they had to install a NOS kit to make the tires squeal in the back. Sort of ridiculous when you take into consideration that a base Chevy Cobalt could run circles around a stock 1980 Turbo T/A. Some magazine called them "Hot Buys" not too long ago which pumped up their price. Knoxzilla wrote As much as I love Smokey & The Bandit, this was the worst model year ever for Trans Am's when it came to performance. "excuse me sir, your ass is on fire, bet you'll be glad to get back to Canada and stick it in the snow" Haha thumbnail 5 is taken from when the bandit says one if his funniest lines In the 2nd thumbnail, it looks to have spare tire and wheel put on in this scene. How did it pull the elephant and baby at the end of the movie? In the second pic, the T/A has a white stripe tire on the front right with a gold painted rim instead of the turbine style! HMMMM.Īs much as I love Smokey & The Bandit, this was the worst model year ever for Trans Am's when it came to performance. Of course, thanks to the movie, sales of Trans-Am skyrocketed, and if Pontiac kept all the Trans-Ams instead of crushing them, each of the cars could have been sold for high prices.See the 3 comments from this page that were archived AuthorĪs many times as I have watched this movie, i never noticed this until Weasel1984 posted his pics.

All of the Trans-Ams, including last surviving one which had no damage at all since it was only used as camera car and for photo stills, were crushed after filming was done on the orders by Pontiac because they only donated the cars to the production, and same thing happened to most if not all police cars.

And couple things which were said and confirmed by everyone is how seven of the Trans-Ams got completely destroyed, not just while filming some heavy stunts like famous river jump, but also some minor stunts like car crashing through all the mail boxes.

Over the years some fans managed to find and ask people who worked on the film or just watched the filming about all this, and the answer which they most often got was how there were eight 1977 special edition Trans-Ams and about the same number (although some said ten) of police cars. Before his death, Burt Reynolds said in interview how they used twelve Trans-Ams and how most of them got destroyed during filming. Some like Hal Needham gave conflicting reports about them only using three or five 1977 Trans-Ams and few police cars. Ever since the film's release, there were so many different rumors about exact number of cars used during filming and what happened to them later, even some official sources like Wikipedia often got their info wrong.
